From Nollywood to Tanzania: Localisation Strategies in the Kiswahili Voice-Over Adaptation of Bloody Ring

Abstract

Film localisation in Tanzania is not simply a matter of transferring dialogue from one language to another; it is a culturally situated practice through which foreign audiovisual narratives are recontextualised for local audiences. This is particularly significant in the circulation of Nollywood films, whose Nigerian cultural references, social practices, and expressions may require negotiation within Tanzanian cultural and linguistic contexts. Tanzanian voice-over narration further complicates conventional translation models because the original English soundtrack remains audible beneath the superimposed Kiswahili narration, producing a hybrid, multilayered audiovisual text in which the narrator mediates both language and cultural meaning. This study examines the Kiswahili voice-over localisation of the Nollywood film Bloody Ring (2012), focusing on how the narrator reconfigures source meanings for Tanzanian audiences. Drawing on contemporary audiovisual translation, localisation, multimodality, and cultural mediation perspectives, the study employs qualitative analysis of selected film segments and their corresponding Kiswahili voice-over realisations. The findings show that localisation is characterised mainly by paraphrasing, omission, addition, cultural substitution, lexical adaptation, and creative reformulation, with the narrator sometimes reshaping meanings rather than reproducing the original dialogue closely. Some expressions and audiovisual elements remain unchanged because the original soundtrack is retained. The study argues that Tanzanian voice-over localisation is a hybrid form of cultural mediation that challenges linear text-to-text models of translation.
